How Wisdom Changes Our Relationship With Uncertainty
Today's Reflection
Wisdom is not knowing what will happen next. It is knowing how to meet what happens next.
Much of our anxiety comes from attempting to secure certainty before we permit ourselves to feel settled.
We want to know whether the decision will succeed, whether the relationship will last, whether our direction is correct or whether circumstances will eventually unfold as we hope.
But certainty is rarely available in advance.
A Deeper Reflection
The contemplative traditions therefore offer another form of security: not confidence in a particular outcome, but confidence in our capacity to remain conscious while life unfolds.
This changes the question.
Instead of asking, "How can I know what will happen?" we begin asking, "What qualities will help me meet whatever happens?"
Patience allows us to remain with uncertainty without immediately escaping it. Discernment helps us recognise what requires action and what requires time.
Courage allows us to move forward without complete guarantees. Compassion softens the way we meet ourselves when uncertainty creates fear or doubt.
Awareness allows us to observe the entire process without becoming completely identified with it.
These qualities travel with us even when circumstances change.
A Question for Today
What quality is this uncertainty asking me to develop?
