Meeting the Grahas
The nine planetary forces — the Navagraha — are the foundation of every Vedic astrology reading. This series introduces each one in turn: their nature, their significations, and the role they play in the birth chart. Articles are published one graha at a time.
In Vedic astrology, the word graha is often translated as "planet," but its literal meaning is closer to "seizer" or "grasper" — a force that takes hold of different areas of life. The nine Navagraha are not simply celestial bodies; they are understood as living intelligences, each governing a distinct domain of human experience.
Every technique in Jyotiṣa — the Dasha timing system, transit predictions, compatibility readings — is built on these nine forces. Getting to know each one individually is the most direct way to begin reading a birth chart with genuine understanding, rather than relying on interpretation alone.
The Nine Grahas
Articles are published one at a time. New entries are added to the Journal when ready.
Start with the Navagraha overview
Before diving into individual grahas, the overview article introduces all nine at once — their names, their domains, and why Vedic astrology has kept this nine-planet structure for thousands of years.

See how the Grahas are placed in your own chart
Understanding the Navagraha in the abstract is one thing. Seeing exactly where they fall in your own birth chart — and what that means for your timing, relationships, and purpose — is another. A personal consultation with Elle brings that picture into focus.
